Scholarship Details and FAQs
The Local Leaders y Comunidad Scholarship is targeted toward local community members and emerging professionals from underrepresented backgrounds whose work is rooted in serving their community, can demonstrate financial need, and have a desire to learn about and contribute to heritage-related fields. This scholarship provides:
- $100 travel stipend
- Full Summit Registration ticket
The recipient will be responsible for completing their own registration, travel, and housing arrangements, as well as any costs beyond the scholarship amount.
This pathway is designed to remove barriers for community members, emerging professionals, and elders who need financial assistance to participate. If you are able to afford a standard ticket, your contribution allows us to continue the valuable work we do to affirm Latinx heritage through education, conservation, advocacy, and leadership development.
Who is eligible?
This scholarship application is open to local advocates and emerging professionals of all ages who are working to save their community and its history. Must be based in Illinois, with an emphasis on the Chicago area.
If you know an elder in the community who would benefit from this opportunity and may need assistance applying, please email Congreso@latinoheritage.us.
How do I apply?
Interested community members should submit a completed application by Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM CST. The applicant will receive notification by May 29, 2026.
If you have difficulty completing the online application form but would like to be considered, please email Congreso@latinoheritage.us.
How is the recipient selected?
A committee of representatives from Latinos in Heritage Conservation will select the scholarship recipient based on the application materials, including the following:
- The individual demonstrates financial need and interest in Latinx heritage.
- Individuals show an active interest and involvement in preserving their heritage, community, and/or BIPOC-related history.
- Has goals to seek an active role in preserving and protecting their community and history.
Does a scholarship recipient have any special obligations while at the summit?
The scholarship recipient is asked to be an active participant at the three-day summit (must attend all three days), provide photographs and testimonials to be used in LHC marketing, and write a thank you note to the scholarship funder.
The Local Leaders y Comunidad Scholarship prioritizes helping participants network and fully experience the conference. A limited number of Local Scholars will also have the chance to present a poster showcasing their research or professional projects at the Cultura & Comunidad Fair.
Applicants who wish to display their work must submit a brief proposal in the application, as poster space is limited. Selected presenters will be required to remain at their poster from 4:00–5:00 p.m. on August 20 and 21 to share their projects with fair attendees.
What are the benefits of the Local Leaders y Comunidad Scholarship?
Beyond the financial component of covering registration costs and the $100 stipend, the Local Leaders y Comunidad Scholarship is an opportunity to network with leaders and community members who are shaping the future of Latinx heritage. Congreso is where participants gain knowledge, tools, and relationships that strengthen preservation efforts at home. It is where you can build personal and professional networks that will serve you for years to come.
Following the conference, all Local Scholars will receive a year long Sustaining Membership to Latinos in Heritage Conservation to help you stay engaged and connected in this work.
